Curriculum & Classes

Sitting in on class last week I was so impressed with Novas teacher. It is clear that knows her students and has a great way of being educational and fun at the same time. A couple of weeks ago my daughter wanted to quit ballet because 'monkey hops are too hard'. During parents' week, I watched as her teacher did them with her and then let her do them on her own and after that class Nova decided she wanted to keep trying. I'm not sure I have a future ballerina but I think she is learning an important lesson about working for her accomplishments. ~ J. Andree (parent)

In our First Steps Program Children's Program (FSCP) dance is introduced through creative play and imagery, simply because this is how young children learn best. The vocabulary and movement concepts covered in each level are what a child of that age can easily understand and master. As the student learns each new skill this helps to build a life long love of dance and self-confidence. The work in each level prepares the students for the next level. By the end of Pre-Ballet and Tap Intro, students can dance set work independent of the teacher, memorize simple exercises and sequences and make a start of musical interpretation. All the concepts of our FSCP prepare the student for when they graduate to our Main Division in Beginner Ballet, Jazz or Tap 1.

These classes are designed to to create an inspiring, uplifting and rewarding dance experience with focus on joy of movement and proper technique combined with the exploration of expression, artistry and performance presentation.

Jazz & Hip Hop (Ages 7 & up)

JAZZ involves a variety of different styles in and of itself this includes; Broadway jazz, lyrical jazz, street jazz and even jazz-funk. Jazz tends to have somewhat of a ballet influence, considering the smooth moves and long lines that jazz dancers must be competent in. HIP HOP is a type of dance style that uses quick movements, and requires quite a bit of athleticism involving all spacial planes, creating an almost illusion-like performance. Hip Hop movements include floating, popping, locking, krumping and breaking..

Tap (Ages 7 & up)

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance as a means to tell a story and is widely performed in musical theater. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, rhythm and improvisation and its practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the jazz tradition.

Ballet (Ages 7 & up)

Ballet is a technical dance form highlighting the use of turnout where the dancer performs all movements with their legs rotated 180 degrees away from each other. Once mastered a dancer can move in any given direction with speed, ease and grace. It is performed on a stage to an audience utilizing costumes, scenic design and lighting. It can tell a story or express a thought or emotion. Ballet can be magical, exciting, or provoking. The Dance Academy ballet program is based on Vaganova (Russian) method of training which is well know for creating strong expressive dancers.

Modern (Ages 10 & up)

Modern dance develops the mind, body and spirit to be an expressive communicator through movement. The technique conditions the body for strength, coordination and flexibility. Focus and emphasis is on the aspects of time, space, shape and movement. Dynamics are explored in group and individual participation through structured combinations as well as improvisation exercises.

Adult Classes (Ages 14 & up)

Adult classes are designed to be an engaging, fun and inspirational introduction for beginning recreational students. Classes for more advanced adult students are listed on our schedules as level 4 and higher. Adult classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.
